Critical national infrastructures are more vulnerable than ever before!
Not just because of our ‘networked interactivity’, that is the ever increasing interconnectedness of our daily life with Smart Home as the stressed example.
Still, quite often understimated is the other aspect of critical infrastructures, which are the interdependencies among them. For example:
- the sector Transport can’t operate without energy as the petrol pumps run on electrical power.
- the sector Energy where Telecommunication is used to control grids, distribution and transformation stations.
- the sector Health, because means of Transport are required to care for patients and to deliver medical supplies.
- the sector Water as pumps to maintain pressure in the pipes also run on electrical power.
Such a list of interdependencies could easily be extended and expanded into details. In addition, there new examples of attacks on critical infrastructures every day.
