Greenbone AG

Greenbone’s roots date back to the early 2000s: OPENVAS (the open-source continuation of the now-proprietary vulnerability scanner Nessus) was significantly shaped by the Greenbone founders from the very beginning—initially through new scanning features and numerous additional testing routines. OPENVAS thus quickly emerged as a free, transparent, and independent alternative to proprietary security solutions. Even in this early phase, the founders collaborated with the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) to address the specific requirements that federal agencies had for a vulnerability scanner.

In 2008, Greenbone Networks GmbH was finally founded, led by Lukas Grunwald and Jan-Oliver Wagner.
Greenbone grew steadily until 2023—then came the next step: Greenbone Networks GmbH was converted into Greenbone AG to place growth, internationalization, and further development on a professional footing. Lukas assumed the chairmanship of the Supervisory Board, and Jan took over as Chairman of the Executive Board—supported by Executive Board member Elmar Geese, who had been providing key support to the management team since 2019. In 2025, Jan handed over leadership to Elmar and left Greenbone the following year to pursue new opportunities.

Today, Greenbone stands for security, transparency, and digital sovereignty. Greenbone AG supports many organizations worldwide in identifying vulnerabilities early on, reducing risks, and maintaining control over their own IT security. Greenbone’s products reflect the shift from vulnerability management to exposure management, the increasing availability of AI, the widespread adoption of cloud technologies, and the steadily growing number of critical vulnerabilities.
